  7. Using the VICE emulator? Ever got
  8. lost in the jungle of PRG files?
  9.  
  10. Well, here is a little helper for
  11. you!

  16. I wished hard enough and someone
  17. somewhere in the murk depths of
  18. programming answered my wish. He
  19. then took my wish enhanced it way
  20. beyond my expectations and released
  21. a piece of software he named the
  22. software PRG STARTER. The software
  23. was so good and easy to use it made
  24. me wonder why I hadn't wished for it
  25. before; or was it that I wasn't
  26. wishing in the right places or
  27. wishing for the right things to
  28. appear. So what am I wishing for and
  29. what does it do.

  31. This software is for emulator users;
  32. specifically (at this time) users of
  33. the Vice Emulator package

  35. software does is to analyse a
  36. Commodore file; be that a PRG or a
  37. D64 tape etc and start the relevant
  38. executable of Vice for that
  39. particular piece of software. (its
  40. like magic has occurred)

  42. So why it this useful.
  43.  
  44. Well here is one scenario:
  45.  
  46. Suppose you have some d64 images but
  47. don't know what machine they are
  48. for, they were filed away in the pit
  49. that is "your Computer disk"
  50. downloaded because they were deemed
  51. useful but have long been forgotten,
  52. were they for the VIC, the Commodore
  53. 64 or the plus4/16?
  54.  
  55. So do you
  56.  
  57. 1. Load each one into each version of
  58. the emulator and hope it will run?
  59. Time consuming
  60.  
  61. 2. Forget about them and delete them
  62. then download them all over again?
  63.  
  64. 3. Run this piece of software and
  65. wonder how you managed before.
  66.  
  67. Maybe before this software appeared
  68. you would have thought about options
  69. 1 and 2. Now it just option 3.

  71. Here is what the website says

  73. Do you recognize this:

  75. "Wait, was this PRG file for the C64
  76. or Vic-20? Or was it for the
  77. unexpanded Vic-20 or for one with 8K
  78. or was it a cartridge file"?

  80. Imagine just double clicking a PRG,
  81. D64 or P00 file, and the file will
  82. be loaded into the correct emulator
  83. and with the correct settings. This
  84. is exactly what PRG Starter does! It
  85. makes VICE so easy to use that even
  86. you mother could do it! ;-)

  88. How does it work
  89.  
  90. The software analyses each file and
  91. starts the relevant configuration
  92. and emulator executable,

  99. software needs the .NET framework
  100. installed this is a free download
  101. from Microsoft available from here

  106. Save the EXE form PRG starter on you
  107. machine where you wish to run it
  108. from, I saved this with my vice
  109. emulator on my c:\ in a folder
  110. called commodore files drive
  111.  
  112. Click SETUP and find the VICE
  113. executable, ANY will do I selected
  114. C64
  115.  
  116. Then you are prompted to select file
  117. to associate with the application
  118.  
  119. Ok that's it close the App and
  120. you're ready to go
  121.  
  122. Double clicking now on any of the
  123. assigned file types starts PRG
  124. starter
  125.  
  126. And runs VICE emulator
  127.  
  128. Something wrong
  129.  
  130. If something doesn't look right and
  131. the software doesn't detect the file
  132. or you want to alter something
  133. clicking on CHANGE gives a new
  134. option where you can configure some
  135. of the settings
